PROJECT CONTENT

Your work will mostly be focused around assisting the kindergarten teachers in teaching the children basic English words and phrases through fun activities like songs and games. You may also be asked to provide assistance to the Care Centre Manager to look after the children. By slowly building their confidence in language and communication you will place the foundations for a lifelong love and curiosity of learning, which will help them in many ways in their future.

You'll work for about 10 hours a week Monday to Friday giving the weekend free to explore. Your morning will be at the kindergarten from 9:30am to approx 11:30 am and your afternoon will be used to prepare your work for the coming days.

This project gives you the chance to encourage children to learn and grow creatively. Apart from teaching them language and communication skills, you have a unique opportunity to sow seeds at this tender age from which they stand to benefit for years to come. As you spend time teaching the local children, you will be embraced by and become an important part of the local community.

The Kindergarten offer care and education to children 4/5 years old from the poor villages in and around the area and they will be very excited to see you. The kindergarten is like any other throughout the world; the children prefer to play and have fun more than to be formally “taught” thus making it your responsibility to get them enthusiastic about coming to school and learning.

The time spent with the local community and children will prove to be a highly rewarding opportunity for you, knowing just how great your impact was.

ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation will be in shared bedrooms of 2-8 people. Rooms in the centre are equipped with fans, hot and cold water and Western style toilets. There is a washing machine for laundry and a bar with a variety of drinks, snacks and food in a unique Chinese atmosphere. The house runs as a ‘family’ so you'll help to clean up and to play your part in keeping the accommodation tidy.

Wi-Fi / Internet: Wi-fi facilities are available throughout the centre, so you are able to Skype and Facebook friends and family.

FOOD:

You will be provided with three meals a day during the week - breakfast, lunch and dinner whilst at the centre. Weekends will be two meals a day – breakfast and dinner. These will be Chinese dishes typical of the local area, comprising mainly rice, noodles and vegetables with a little meat. This can seem to lack the variety of food within the West, but it is typical of the village.

REVIEWS AND FEEDBACK

Jordan Scott:
"I really do not want to leave! And I can definitely say this has been one of the best times of my life! It really has, it has changed my life in so many different ways I can't explain in words!"

Lynn (Swedish):
"It has been a most amazing experience. Not just meeting and working with the pandas, but learning about the culture and society of China. The volunteers are friendly and fun to hang out with, so evenings are pretty great. I think it's fair to say that I've had a few culture shocks, so much here is different from my home in Sweden, but I've had a great time discovering these differences. I definitely want to come back someday."

Judy Machin:
"The whole trip was amazing and your organisation terrific - we can learn so much from China!"
